Malahat Traffic Online

If you're looking for driving conditions on the Malahat highway, see the DriveBC website run by the provincial Ministry of Transportation. Live webcam pictures of the road are posted here, and updated every 15 minutes.

It snowed in Victoria yesterday, and the white stuff always causes chaos on a steep section of the Trans-Canada Highway nicknamed "the Malahat" (for the mountain it traverses) just north of the city. According to my web-traffic software many people were looking for news about the roads, and since my blog is hosted by Google, it ranked higher than the MoT's site when people used search keywords like "Malahat closed". So I thought I'd better steer everyone to the official info. Glad to be of service.

PS If you're interested in learning more about the history of the Malahat highway, check out this story on John MacFarlane's fine Nauticapedia site, or this one by Old Langford author Maureen Duffus.
